It's Alive! Alive!

The brain transplant was successful. Frankenmac is alive again!

Once he had a piddly 120mhz PPC 604e brain; then at the turn of the century, a respectable 400mhz G3, today he woke up with OS X Tiger and 1 Gz of G4 glory! ...not too shabby for a 12 year old computer.

With all that's been going on lately, several personal projects had to be put on hold. Today I finally got some free time.

Today started poorly, the first project was to replace the dvd burner in my G5. Unfortunately nobody in Calgary has the Pioneer burner that I need in stock.

The second project was to rebuild the firewall. I got my OpenBSD 4.2 disks back in October, well before the official release, but finally broke the shrink wrap today.

After a vanilla OpenBSD installation, I copied Roy's ancient bsdwall script into /usr/local/bin, ran it, put the custom pf.conf and dhcpd.conf files in /etc and rebooted. The whole process took far less than an hour. Thanks Theo!

Early next year, I'm planning to start work on a successor to BSDwall, tentatively called "Son of BSDwall" (S.O.B. for short). We'll see what develops.

This weekend's third project will be a brain transplant for my "Frankenmac". I'm dropping in a 1 Ghz G4, replacing the G3/400 (an earlier upgrade). I've had the card since November, just no time to do the work.

The frankenmac is a late 1995 Powermac 7600 that's had substantial hardware upgrades. It's currently running OS X Tiger (10.4)

Well, back to work...

September Transformation

Brenda used to work as a draftsperson at Shell, here in Calgary. Simon Camping was also a draftsperson at Shell, but he retired a few years after Brenda started working there.

When we first started dating, Brenda took me to a local art gallery that was showing Simon Camping's paintings. Brenda loves hiking in the mountains... and I guess you could call Mount Assiniboine Simon Camping's muse. It's no surprise that Brenda fell in love with his work, but she didn't buy a painting. She has always regretted that decision.

Earlier this year Brenda got a bit of a windfall. Today she bought "September Transformation"

The subject is the saddle ridge on Mount Magog. If you travel to Lake Magog and look just to the left of Mount Assiniboine, you'll find it.

Here Come Da Judge

September 30th, 2007 (10:51 pm)

Post-shaman death dream, a mysterious person added me as a friend. Looks like she went to Queen's a few years before I attended. There was a "what sort of empath" quiz on her page — and the result is:

You scored as Judge,You are a Judge Empath, one who is a "truthsayer". You can tell truth from lies, good from evil. You do not tolerate wrong doing. You are a defender of the good and the innocent. You are kind and merciful but do not play foolish games. (from "The Book of Storms" by Jad Alexander at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Empaths/)

Well! I wonder what that means...

Shaman predicts Death beside the Dartboards

September 21st, 2007 (07:23 pm)
current song: Wagon Wheel - Old Crow Medicine Show

Last night I had one of the oddest dreams of my life. It started out merely strange, there was a part with drag queens in clown makeup, but then it got downright disturbing...

I was in a bright white room, about to open a door. Brenda had just told me that her father was coming to visit and to let him in, but the person that I invited in wasn't Brenda's dad. He was a native (amerindian) man roughly the same height as me. He had long thick black hair and dark reddish skin. He looked like he spent a lot of time outdoors. His clothes were weather beaten and so was he.

As he stepped through the door he said to me "Mike ______ you are about to die". He didn't say my last name properly, somehow I think that's a good thing.

"When?", I asked.

"Next week."

He kind of smiled and said "Beside the dart boards".

"Will it be a good death?"

This question surprised him a little. He paused a moment and then said, "Well it's not my best work... but yes, it will be a good death."

At some point during our conversation I touched his arm. His skin was like stone, warm unpolished stone.

"Who sent you?"

"Some girl you used to date. You know, " he added, "you've lived in this house too long."

Then he walked away and I woke up.

I've never had someone wander through one of my dreams like that before. It's odd that I felt no fear. I was curious, surprised and possibly a little disappointed by the possibility of ending.

Next week could be interesting

Sean's Prom Photos

My nephew Sean went to the prom last Friday. My brother sent me a few photos, so I threw together a little web page so that friends and family could see them.

Movie Time

August 3rd, 2006 (11:02 pm)

Well, I have my 15 seconds of movie "fame". I went to the The Muffin Man screening on Tuesday night. The movie is campy & quite funny in spots... and there's an introduction by Lloyd Kaufman, director of the Toxic Avenger. Who knows, with a bit of luck our little show could become a cult movie.

It was an indy production, made for $1,100, so nobody got paid... however, cast & crew got copies of the DVD. The music's all original and pretty good... and there are some mp3's on the disk. I bought a bunch more, so Christmas shopping for the family is done!

After the show, we went to Key West (a non-smoking bar) and had a little celebration. I talked the waitress into giving us the hash house harrier discount, so we drank Big Rock beer for $3 a bottle. Apparently I left the bar too early though: the night was capped off by an "elitist, angry, venom-spewing artsy-fartsy filmmaker who harranged us at our table (until Anders expertly eviscerated him and shut him up)". Some folks have no taste for cheese.
